Ninki Izakaya, Toronto

Another new Japanese izakaya for the Toronto scene. If they good improve on certain aspects, Ninki could be a good pre-ballet/opera dinner destination.

 Fresh sea urchin roe.

Grilled tongue with ginger sauce. Nice taste of the grill, an OK dish, but the slices were a bit too thin so that the normally pleasing aspects of the texture of tongue, were lost.

Deep fried squid with spicy tempura batter and spicy dipping mayo sauce. The batter was a bit too thick and too greasy. The squid was a touch overcooked.

Octopus balls, deep fried, topped with tonkatsu sauce, mayo, mildly smoky bonito flakes and cut nori. A very tasty dish, with a good sized chunk of octopus submerged in the ball. One of the better versions of this dish that I have tasted in Toronto.

Eggplant with sweet miso, passable but I would skip this dish.

Grilled salmon collar with ponzu sauce. I love collar, it was fine, but the fish could have been "a hair" fresher.

Chicken marinated in ginger sauce and deep fried, accompanied by wasabi flavoured mayo and salt. Very tasty, not overcooked, with a pleasing, light batter.

Grilled yellowtail collar with ponzu sauce. Again, I love collar, it was fine, but the fish could have been "a hair" fresher.
